Project Overview

How might augmented reality be used to accelerate language learning?

For XR Design Challenge 2024-2025, team Lemon Sharks explored the potential benefits of spatialized educational content. Case study DuolingoXR translates the hit language learning app into augmented reality with art and gameplay completely reimagined in 3D.

DuolingoXR won Best Mobile App to XR App and Best Use of Shapes XR, and was a Best Packaging Finalist out of 200+ projects and 3,000+ attendees.

Individual Work

Reimagining the world of Duolingo in three dimensions

Modeled, textured, and animated Duo (Duolingo mascot), supporting characters, and props.

Duolingo's art style is designed with in 2D in mind, so most elements needed to be redesigned to be possible in 3D. To preserve the Duolingo feel, it was important to use primitive shapes– spheres, beveled cubes, pills – and flat colors to create the illusion of 2D.

Video Production

Creating a gameplay trailer

Produced a short video trailer highlighting core features and gameplay as part of the submission to the XR Design Challenge.
